Choosing the Best Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan
Medicare Supplement Medigap insurance is private health insurance designed mainly for people over 65 to supplement Medicare’s benefits by filling in some of Medicare’s coverage.
A Medicare Supplement Medigap policy generally pays for Medicare approved charges not paid by Medicare because of deductibles or coinsurance amounts for which you are responsible.
However, Medicare Supplement policies are highly regulated by State and Federal laws. These laws protect you.
All states (except Massachusetts, Minnesota & Wisconsin), insurance companies can only sell you a “standardized” Medigap policy. Standardized Medigap policies are identified by letters (Medigap Plans A through L) as described in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Booklet “Choosing a Medigap Policy”
In Wisconsin, all policies must provide a basic set of benefits and are allowed to offer certain options that you may choose. Each of the options that an insurance company offers must be priced and sold separately from the basic policy.
Refer to Wisconsin Guide to Health Insurance for People with Medicare.
Some insurance companies offer Medicare supplement or Medicare select cost-sharing policies. Benefits are provided after you have paid 25% or 50% cost sharing up to a maximum in out-of-pocket expenses during a calendar year. The out-of-pocket limits for Medicare supplement or Medicare select cost-sharing policies are updated each year and are based on estimates of the United States Per Capital Costs (SPCC) of the Medicare program published by CMS.
Many insurance companies market Medicare Supplement (Medigap) protection, but they may not provide the same benefit choices. And even those that do frequently cost more than other plans providing identical coverage. So, it really pays to compare.
